Fake news. Everyone knows the old west only had player pianos.

Friday! This will be a working weekend, so no travel today. I’m gearing up for a big change coming soon....

I like the single naked lightbulb. The symphony did a series of children’s concerts this week, and the conductor talked to the kids and said, “What do you think the composer was thinking about when he wrote this piece?”
And I replied, “I’m hungry.”

Yeah shouldn’t it be an oil lamp or something?

That’s different. That’s the incidental music. Larson loved to break the fourth wall.

You ought to enjoy today’s FSF offerings. I decided to do a theme of sorts with song joke ones.

See, when I first read the strip as a kid, I didn’t get it - because I knew my Hendrix but not my litany of classic musicals. I was up on Singin’ in the Rain and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, but Paint Your Wagon had escaped me.

Imagine how much of Far Side will be lost on future generations.

Better than “ I’m horny!” followed with a few short sharp blasts to drive it home.

I went down the Brisco County rabbit hole and just noticed the jet contrail clearly visible in this clip. They never took it too seriously... It was a great, short-lived show.

Speak for yourself, I’m going to be making the younger generation watch musicals. By force, if necessary.

I had no idea that Harve Presnell was in Saving Private Ryan and Fargo . Now I’ve got to go find the scenes. Though I had promised myself I’d never watch Ryan again.

My daughter loves musicals, but I don’t think she’s watched many of the older ones. She’s currently at practice for the school’s spring production.
My son? Forget about it.

Apparently he’s the skinflint father in law in Fargo. I can sort of see how there wasn’t a way for him to have a singing scene, though obviously the Coens don’t have a problem with musical numbers on thin pretext. I mean, Oh Brother Where Art Thou and the hallucination from Big Lebowski aside, they made flipping Hail Caesar...
(^if you haven’t seen it, one of the movie-in-movie scenes being shot in the Hollywood studio setting of the movie)

May I ask what composer was under question at the moment?

There was so much “future seeing” in that show. It was awesome.

My two favorite “quick gags” were:
1) They are in the saloon, decide to get food, and call the waiter over: “My name is Todd, I’ll be your server today— Let me take a moment to go over our specials for you...” And Bowler does this double-take, “Specials!???!?”
2) IN the background of one street scene in the dusty little western town you can clearly see the row of riders-on-horses lined up for the Drive-Through (Ride-Through?) at the coffee shop across the street.

I think we had just finished the first piece, Hedwig’s Flight from Harry Potter. The conductor asked the kids if they recognized the music (most did), and he used it as an example of how John Williams used the music to portray the owl, much like the students might do when using words in an essay to express their point. We followed that with the Infernal Dance from Firebird, with it’s depiction of the battle between Ivan and Katschei.
